Time marches on – it is inevitable and that marching band plays a song that leads to the aging of our skin. Wrinkles are simply a part of getting old – or are they? Are those who choose to undertake Botulinum Toxin treatment also known as Botox right to do so – and does it represent value for money? Let’s examine the facts about Botox.
Botox has a long history as a treatment that doctors have been using for years to treat wrinkles and age-related facial creases. It’s marketed under a variety of names such as Botox, Myobloc, and Jeuveau (among others) It’s a toxin made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum which when applied via an injection weakens or paralyzes muscle – hence its therapeutic effect. It actually prevents the release of acetylcholine – which stops the muscle cells from contracting.
The fact that the American Food and Drug Administration (the FDA) has approved Botox as a treatment should give those using it a measure of confidence that it actually is safe to use. However there is a caveat – it has only been approved for use around the eyes and on the forehead.
But the bacteria is used for more than cosmetic purposes – it can also be used to treat various muscle or nerve disorders.
Botox (which is a registered trademark – there are many other others) acts by disrupting the nerve signaling processes that stimulate muscle contraction. When used correctly to deal with wrinkles it has very few side effects. But the operative word here is ‘correctly’. Botox should never be administered by someone who is not trained in its use.
It also has a number of other uses. For instance, it is used by medical practitioners to treat upper limb spasticity, crossed eyes, severe underarm sweating, and preventing migraines (among many other medical uses).
When used to deal with wrinkles it is diluted in saline and administered directly (via injection) into neuromuscular tissue. The effects can be seen in around 24 to 72 hours. Each treatment can last for between three months and a year. Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not go for Botox treatment.
Each Botox treatment lasts around 30 minutes and should be repeated every three to six months.
In short, Botulinum Toxin treatment is an effective and safe remedial approach for age-related wrinkles and specific medical conditions. However, prior to the treatment, it is important to find out whether the person who is administering it is qualified to do so. If in doubt consult your medical practitioner.
